BOHEMIA, NY – September 2025 -- North Atlantic Industries (NAI), a leader in rugged embedded computing solutions, announces the release of the CM4, a COSA® (Configurable Open Systems Architecture™) smart function module that merges four multi-protocol serial communications channels with twelve programmable discrete I/O channels in a single function module. The CM4 reduces module count and harness complexity while preserving configuration flexibility for MOSA-aligned upgrades across mission and support equipment.
Built on NAI’s COSA® architecture, the CM4 integrates proven I/O functions into one high-density module. It offers four independently configurable RS-232/422/485 channels supporting ASYNC up to 1.5 Mbps and SYNC up to 10 Mbps, with optional RTS/CTS flow control or clocked SYNC. Each channel includes independent TX/RX buffers sized for burst traffic and loopback for IBIT/diagnostics. In addition, the module provides twelve programmable discrete I/O channels (0–60 V) that can be configured as inputs or outputs. These channels support debounce, input edge/pulse/frequency measurement with counters, and output PWM or pattern generation for precise signaling. Together, these features enable cleaner integration, fewer harness touchpoints, and flexible channel mapping across airborne, ground, and maritime defense platforms.
“The CM4 expands the flexibility of our COSA portfolio by combining two widely used I/O functions into one rugged solution,” said Lino Massafra, VP of Sales and Marketing at North Atlantic Industries. “This module gives system designers the ability to support multiple communication standards and discrete controls without adding complexity, helping them accelerate development and improve overall system performance.”
The CM4 Function Module is available now as part of NAI’s COTS solutions portfolio. For more information, visit www.naii.com.
